Former U.S. President  Jimmy  Carter speaker at final Plenary session, Lions clubs International Convention  in Chicago July 6th, 2007

Excerpt from speech July 6th , 2007 Lions Magazine October 2007.

 Former President Jimmy Carter spoke on the joint efforts of the Carter Center and Lions Sightfirst program  to reduce vision loss from River Blindness and Trachoma.

But first President  Carter spoke  of the success of the joint  efforts of the Carter Center  and Lions Sightfirst program to reduce vision loss from River Blindness and Trachoma. 

President Jimmy Carter recalled his deep  Lions roots : his father was founding member of his club and he (Jimmy) Carter) visited the more thsn two hundred clubs in his district while district governor

 "Lionism has been the moral foundation for all my public service, he said I am proud to be a Lion I've said the same thing for the past 54 years."

President Carter  continued " Years ago when I was visiting  an African village where river blindness was so pervasive that it was common  to see the young lead the old with a stick.  He( Jimmy Carter) saw a baby and reflected on the disparity in medical care there. and in developed nations,

Carter's eyes filled with tears, . But his sadness was

relieved knowing that because of Lions that baby would

 never be blind"
